How to play
A famous line has been scrambled with a letter swap. Work out which letter stands for which and the quotation reads itself.
- Tap a small cipher letter and type the letter you think it stands for. Every copy updates at once.
- Each letter has exactly one partner, and no letter stands for itself.
- Hint places one correct letter. Check marks your wrong guesses in red.
- The author is revealed when the quotation is cracked.
About cryptogram
A cryptogram is a short text encrypted with a simple substitution cipher: every letter of the alphabet is replaced by another letter, the same way throughout the text.
Good starting points are one-letter words, which are usually A or I, and common three-letter words such as THE and AND.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a letter stand for itself?
- No. Every cipher here is built so that no letter maps to itself.
- Where do the quotations come from?
- From classic writers and sayings, including Benjamin Franklin, William Shakespeare, Aristotle and Emily Dickinson.
- Is the cipher the same each time?
- No. A new random cipher is created every time you start a game.
